Part 4 - The Presidents: MUN

Q: Why did you join MUN?

A: Honestly, I watched Parks and Rec in 8th grade and there was this episode where Leslie, the main character, did MUN and at that time I was completely blindsided by the fact that that’s that not MUN is actually like. I didn’t even see the MUN booth at the actual club info fair, I just walked by, purely by coincidence and I was like okay I’ll just drop in for the interest meeting. I’ve been in it for 4 years now.

Q: What is the proudest moment you’ve had in the club?

A: The one question I always get is, what do you guys do in MUN cause no one really knows what MUN is or the idea of international diplomacy. Unlike clubs like DECA or FBLA, everyone knows business and business is an acceptable field for Asians to major in college. I guess MUN wasn’t as appreciated as a club, so the single proudest moment would be MVMUN got ranked top 50 in the nation. And I was like oh my god that is amazing cause like we’re a STEM focused school and there’s all these private schools out there that have Model UN classes. That was a really proud moment and I just remember all the seniors being like so nostalgic about building the club up like when we had to share a room with the French club and now was have like 2 meetings per week.

Another interesting thing to add in is MUN is such a male-dominated club. [...] It’s that way because conferences are all about leadership and catching people’s attention really quick so if you’re a really tall guy with a deeper voice that actually helps you like. So my partner and I really work on talking louder ad making our voices lower to seem more dominant, which is extremely problematic but there’s nothing we can do about it.

Q: How would you market this club to a freshman?

A: In our presentation, we always say it looks good on college apps but [...] MUN requires a lot of interpersonal relationships cause if you look good in front of the public but when you go do one on one discussion time, and kids don’t like what you’re saying then all your efforts go to waste. So I would market to the freshmen that MUN is truly a place where you can develop your writing skills and research skills.
