Part 3 - The Presidents: Speech

Q: What’s one speech moment you’re proud of?

A: This year, we were able to win sweeps awards at some tournaments. I’m not sure exactly what place we were at, but being able to be in the top of a lot of the clubs and classes at a big tournament like that was super special to me. As a freshman, I attended some of these tournaments and I could have never imagined [having] so many students break at a tournament, to have that be something that happens […] Another thing this year that I was super proud of is that we were able to hire assistant coaches, which is something that I think really helped our team grow and do better at tournaments.

Q: What legacy do you want to leave behind for the club?

A: Being part of the management part of speech for three years now, I definitely want to leave behind a lot of the systems and processes that we have in place to ensure that the club runs smoothly […] Another thing that I think I want to leave behind is the aspect of family that we've sort of developed in speech. I know that as a freshman, it wasn't particularly close together, and we would all kind of compete on our own. But now, I think that captains and members are closer together, and we care about each other a lot more and I think that that's something that will last.

Q: What does speech offer that other big clubs on campus don’t?

A: Speech compared to a lot of the other clubs on campus has a huge variety of things to do. So if you're more interested in the writing aspect of things and you want to convince someone of an idea that you have, you can join original. Or if you're more interested in drama, or if you've been part of theater before, then we have interpretation events where you take a piece and you act it out […] If you're more interested in coming up with things on the spot, or developing that type of skill, we have impromptu. If you're really interested in the news and what's going on in the world, you can do extemporaneous, which is an event where you talk about current events. Either you can pick one event and be super into it, or you can move around and learn a bunch of different skills.
