A Different Outlook

“It’s called Global Competence.... this is a concept that I learned in the summer in my professional development. Basically, to build a student's global competence, there are four steps. First, we realize there are the real world problems. Second, we recognize different perspectives. And third, we communicate ideas to target language, and fourth, we take actions. I feel like we're seeing a lot of sad news this summer United States and right now China, and Hong Kong. I was taking sides before, many [of them being] strong sides. And then I got to know people from the “other side”. Friends, close friends, family members even. And when I actually sat down [with then], I was like, hey we can connect, like, we are human. We connect first, and then, we go on to different political views. But the fact that we get to sit down and connect with each other knowing that they have a perspective on this, [and knowing that] just because they have a different perspective, doesn’t mean they are bad people. You know, I feel like that's where our society is at right now. We don't even have this perspective. When you first try to understand each other, you should be human first, and then we discuss what issue is.”
